2018 31 Days of Scary Movies – October 2 – Sundown: Vampires in Retreat

Yesterday’s movie featured a family moving from Phoenix Arizona to fictional small beach town Santa Carla California where they discover… well I think Grandpa’s quote sums it up pretty nicely:

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires.”

This begs the question – wouldn’t have staying in the hot bright desert be a safer choice at least vampire-wise? Today’s film answers that question!

Today is October 2nd

Today’s film is 1989’s Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat

#Vampires

Sundown‘s plot revolves around vampires who pursue synthetic blood as a way to live peacefully among humans – but there is infighting among the group as logistics make mass production difficult and soon a schism results with some believing that hunting humans is their right.

Now, you might be thinking that this sounds familiar and that’s probably because a major plot in the HBO True Blood series is almost identical. But you’ll find that the two share little else. Sundown is a vampire western comedy! It’s campy and absurd in wonderful little ways like Bruce Campbell’s goofy comic relief role as vampire hunter, a strangely repeated and detailed reference to infidelity and finally a vampire film that logically portrays the bat-to-vampire transformation.

That’s right horror junkies – The Evil Dead’s Ash plays comic relief in today’s film! Let’s head out to the little town of Purgatory and don’t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen!
